QuickTime v7.4 & After Effects

I worked late last night because my two After Effects (v7) projects stopped rendering due to an unforseen error (screenshot below).

After Effects error (-54)

Apparently, I'm not alone. Apple's latest release of QuickTime (v7.4) has caused frustration through much of the production world, evidenced by the volume of postings on the Apple Support pages and also on the Adobe Forums as well.

It appears that the only viable work-around, until an new update is made available, is to render your After Effects compositions as an image sequence (JPG, TGA, TIFF, etc.), and then subsequently open (and export) the sequence using QuickTime Pro. I am currently working on a project that was estimated to take three hours when rendering to QuickTime. It now appears that the same project will take five hours (or more) to render as an image sequence. This has complicated my life a bit, but it isn't a crisis for me yet - just a time-waster.

From my perusal of the forums, it appears that some users are taking a much more drastic approach to solving this issue. Some posts were from people who were understandably upset and very concerned about meeting a deadline. Some even mentioned reinstalling all of their software, and plug-ins, to get their projects back in working order (wow - I know that I don't want to do that). Others mentioned that they had attempted to reverse their QuickTime upgrade using an app I'm not familiar with, called Pacifist - and a few stated that this reversal had caused complications with other apps (especially iTunes) and perhaps even the operating system (yikes!).

The last time I recall something like this happening was in the mid-1990s... and there wasn't anything we could do about it then, except search for a reasonable work-around and wait for an update...

Patienty waiting,
Greg
